Mass Violence or Terrorism
On January 1, 2025, a tragic terror attack occurred on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. When such events happen and multiple lives are lost, federal agencies typically become involved in the investigation and the recovery and victim assistance process.
In these situations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will set up a Family Assistance Center (FAC) where survivors or family members of victims whose lives were lost can go to retrieve belongings and to be connected with local, state, and federal resources:
The FAC is typically open on a short term basis (days to weeks)
In addition to the return of personal effects and belongings, the FAC offers: crisis, financial, legal and emergency housing assistance, needs assessments, and mental health services through both national and local partner agencies.
After the FBI departs, many communities develop a Resiliency Center to continue to offer support to those impacted, and a public facing website to help community members connect with help long-term. The Office for Victims of Crime offers grants to support this work.
The National Mass Violence Center (NMVC) provides information to communities after mass violence and has self-help resources for survivors: https://nmvvrc.org/survivors/self-help
