HOW DO I TRACK MY SEXUAL ASSAULT KIT?

The State of Louisiana has a new SURVIVOR PORTAL to TRACK YOUR SEXUAL ASSAULT KIT (SAK). If you had a forensic medical exam on or after July 1, 2024 in Louisiana, you should be able to use this portal to track the progress of your Sexual Assault Kit (SAK) within the system - from the hospital where you had the exam, to the law enforcement agency handling your case, to the forensic lab and results, and to the prosecution status of your case (if applicable).

HOW DO I TRACK MY SEXUAL ASSAULT KIT?

You will be given a SURVIVOR CARD at the location of your forensic medical exam

If you get a forensic medical exam after July 1, 2024:

There will be a KIT NUMBER on the card

Enter the number in the box on the PORTAL at https://sakt.louisiana.gov

WHAT WILL THE SURVIVOR PORTAL SHOW ME?

COLLECTION FACILITY: your forensic exam date and location (usually the hospital)

Results will show your kit’s location and progress:

LAW ENFORCEMENT: the police or law enforcement agency your kit was sent to, and the date it was sent

FORENSIC LAB: the forensic lab your kit was sent to for testing, and the date it was sent

LAB ANALYSIS: information on your kit’s lab analysis/results

PROSECUTION: information on your case’s prosecution

What is a FORENSIC MEDICAL EXAM (FME)?

A specialized (free) exam in a medical setting by a SANE NURSE where evidence of a sexual assault or abuse is collected and placed in a SEXUAL ASSAULT KIT (SAK) sometimes called a RAPE KIT. Other needs like injuries, emergency contraception, and/or sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention are addressed. Learn more here: https://www.rainn.org/articles/rape-kit

What are SANE NURSES and where can I get an exam?

SANE NURSES are specially trained to conduct forensic medical exams and are only at certain hospitals. In Orleans Parish, those 15 and older can be seen at University Medical Center (UMC). Another option, during regular business hours (M-F 8am to 4pm), is the Hope Clinic within the New Orleans Family Justice Center. In Jefferson Parish, you can visit Tulane Lakeside Hospital.

Children (17 + under) in Orleans Parish can visit Children’s Hospital’s Audrey Hepburn Care Center 24/7. In Jefferson Parish, Children’s Advocacy Center in Gretna.

THE PORTAL IS CURRENTLY ACTIVE: Sexual Assault Kits (SAKs) with tracking numbers are already in the hands of facilities that provide forensic medical exams - meaning anyone who has an exam after July 1, 2024 should get a SURVIVOR CARD with TRACKING NUMBER

TRACKING NUMBER: if you misplace your SURVIVOR CARD, you can get the tracking number by contacting the facility where you had your exam, or the law enforcement agency (police detective) investigating your case
